Disney's Brave!

Without going into much detail, I was approached by a Partner in the above Production to do some boards involving the Brave environment.
The AD had seen some previous post I had made in respect of my penchant for utilising paper maquettes from time-to-time on board projects. He liked the look and wanted to do something similar for this project.
Here are some samples. The first image is the raw Photo. Then I coloured them in PS. The AD had a specific "washed-out" look in mind for the colours.
I enjoyed this gig as it was very diferent from my normal day-to-day!

While working on Olivia, we were asked to do a Cold Start. This was the first time I had experienced such a thing and I was definitely not prepared.

Now having done them on other productions, I really enjoy the challenge.

What you are being asked is "Hey, can you fill-in something funny here". Such opportunities should not be squandered. These are a chance to augment your productions core themes and the characters character traits.

I did some elements fro the cold start on Olivia, while working out how it would run.

"Run-On"

Normally after a gig that requires an NDA I do some "Run-on" samples. So whatever 'style' the gig is done in I carry on with the lessons learned from that gig and put them into some further context that I might be free to use in my portfolio.

As part of this process I'm trying to find a good look for some characters. Here are two such samples. The first is a Kree Soldier 'n' Earthquake and the second is a more kiddie-version of the Kree and Skrull Soldiers.

This has been the most fun I have had drawing in a long time. Probably since, way back when to draw came naturally unencumbered with what was the right or wrong way to draw and things like rules and procedures, deadlines and expectations put the squeeze on.

I’ve often been piqued by the ‘Homage’, as it appears in comics. Far too often the image would leave me thinking that it was more about ripping someone else’s riff than any public display of admiration.

So, I’ve been more than mildly tickled at this little pet project. Recently my laptop’s processor appears to have been, well, not processing very well and while a Photoshop file was saving I took the fifteen minutes to sit and doodle. The sketch that just sort of appeared on the page was of Gladiator. “Praetor of the Imperial Guard of the Sh’iar Empire”

As is often the case while doodling, your mind wanders off. This time it took me back to when I was reading the Fantastic Four and Gladiator’s appearance within. Fond memories. The artist of this comic, already well established at the time (1982/83), was John Byrne. His artwork, pretty much single-handedly, made me want to draw, more, inspired me to try harder and it was great fun.

A lot of artists under-study a master, traditionally done in the same studio, however (and I’m not unique in this) for me, my apprenticeship was done remotely and without the knowledge of my master. Easily a decade spent as a teen, studying, practicing, emulating, tracing, copying, seeing me through to twenty-odd years old, trying to draw the same as John.

Eventually we step away from the track our mentors are on, they follow their flame, as do we and so it was natural that my burning desire to draw like John Byrne ebbed away and was replaced by wanting to draw under my own terms and aspirations.

All this entangled nostalgia reared itself in this one little Gladiator sketch and I thought maybe I’d like to mark this feeling with a drawing, a ‘Homage’.

And so, that is what I did, I hope you enjoy this, I have the greatest respect for John Byrne as an artist and here I took the time to embrace him again with a look at the Fantastic Four number 249, “Man and Super-Man”.

So, I'm just about done on my next Cosplay-Cutie. The inspiration for this one was taken by the lovely Victoria and her Halloween images she posted a week or so ago. Victoria is a -real- Cosplay Cutie and as such I've been looking to have a go at drawing her but curiously enough the obvious connection between her Cosplaying and my "Cosplay Cuties" hadn't occured to me...I know, I'm not the brightest star in the sky!

The final will be posted later, debating whether I should wait until tomorrow to post or not...we'll see. Anyway's I thought I'd post the rough, just to whet appetites;-)

As the 'Waybuloo' Project ran on the boards began to become less rigid and convey a lot better emotions. It was great to see the boarders develop and mature over the series.

So Gerald and I got to a point on "Waybuloo" where we were running at full steam and were still managing to find time to do covers, here and there for each set of boards handed in. These, like the boards, became a little competitive, such was the dynaimic between Gerald and I, always pushing each other for better work.

This was one such cover for the episode "Cheep Cheep!"

This is a concept piece done one day a few years back, while working on an animated feature. The Director thought it'd be a laugh if a character from an altogether diferent movie accidently wandered into this one.
The character was a Mexican taxi driver and after receiving the brief from the Director, this is what we settled on.

My eldest daughter (12) found herself foul of the old caveat "If your Dad can draw then so can you!" and asked if I could help her out. She'd been grouped with four boys for an assignment at school.
Boys being boys they chose to do a sports car. A Lamborgini and Bugatti joined together.
My daughter was to draw it for their poster. So I at with at Photoshop and used the opportunity to show her how to use the Line and Warp tool. This was what I did for her.

So a commission I'm doing, Wonder Woman sat on Cap Americas' shield, is ready for inking now.

I'm looking forward to the inking phase but I'm one of those inkers who fire from the gut. I obviously weigh my line making decisions against years and years of experience but still, it's what feels right for that image and that always gives me butterflies. Because you have to admit, that regardless how good you are, you -could- still make a wrong choice.

Saying all that, it's not like it's permenant, you can white out and carry on, or start over! But then, it's always nice to Hit the Home-Run on the first bat;-)

And so, anyone connected to the UK APA, the Temple around the time I was there, might recall the FF-Styled team I came up with, called the Challengers. Well I was tinkering around with a new colouring package today and fired out a quick sketch of Pandora (Sue Storms role.)

Felt this was succesful in some areas and not-so in others.

Will consider doing more.

Some Like It Hot!

I am fortunate enough to have some artistic influences, who are also friends. I did a cartoony drawing of some mobster-type character not-so-long ago and one such friend was reminded of the film, 'Some Like It Hot' or more accurately, the Mobsters from the film.
Well this comment has sat in my head gestating for a while and without my knowledge my brain has been stirring it around with some of the lovely Indiana Jones sketches that Adam Hughes did.
The outcome of this is that I've started doing some sketches based on the aforementioned film.

Some considerable time ago, in fact you may even recall, I was commissioned to do two "Preacher" covers. Well I did them and posted them off to the nice guy whom commissioned me---or, at least, so I thought.

So let's speed forward to yesterday, having received my first commission of the year I was prompted to do a spot of early-Spring cleaning. While cleaning out a small corner of my studio I found the two Covers and thought "Uh-Oh!" Seems I didn't post them after all. To make matters worse, the second of the two covers didn't have the blacks spotted! "Double-Yeow!". I clearly couldn't start the new commission untill this one was resolved, right!?

Anyway I put out a call for the nice-man and he got in touch. Really nice, saying he knew that they'd come through some day and didn't want to push for them. I've apologiesed for my tardiness and will include a little extra for him but here's the teaser I sent him. Once he's seen the original, I'll then post the full commission here.

Now I can re-open for commissions.
